Just a quick update because the stuff is all packed up to be set up tomorrow because i had work today and could not get to the Queen in time to set up tonight. Anywho, I've got a red and blue dye pot (using kool-aid because i know it works, it smells fruitily delicious, and it dyes very dark) and the motors for those set up. The crank unfortunately will have to be hand-cranked because I could not get that motor working. I fried a board trying to work out how to use the power supply so I didn't exactly want to risk it with the other board (on loan from Catherine). So I will include instructions to make sure people know to play with the project. I don't see it as a total loss though since so many people in class wanted to crank it and seemed to oddly enjoy doing so, I think it will actually add a level of interaction. And I'm all about interaction. I will put pictures up tomorrow, very sorry Phil.

knitting machine ordered
I've ordered my knitting machine. It's a plastic mattel one from 1974. This sounds terrible, but generally, the older ones are a bit more durable, plus it was only 15 dollars, including shipping, so you can't beat that. Especially when my other options were closer to 500.
It should be here sometime this week. I still need to order the stepper motors and go explore home depot/hobby lobby for the setup.

final project
Okay, so knitting machines (even non computerized ones) are a-okay for this project. I did some googling, and ebay turned up with a few around 100 bucks. I might be able to find a non-functioning (i.e. motor or computer parts are broken) one for less if I'm lucky. Either way this cost isn't TOO prohibitive for me. I also found this video of another wind powered one.
This shows how it works much better than the other one. I still need to think of exactly how it will be powered, but I do know that I want it interactive. Perhaps I'll just have it powered by the number of people who walk by (every person is a row) or something like that. I need to brainstorm really bad for this, but my other class has kind of taken over my life :(.

Motors!
For this project we have to have use two motors. Last week I was really inspired (I guess inspired sounds a little hokey, maybe amused? Intrigued? Interested?) by Laura's project (the evil hallway). I thought it sounded like a lot of fun to go down, actually. So, for this project I'm taking the idea of an environment that doesn't like you and translating it to a blonde's worst enemy. Stairs. Specifically, stairs that trip you as you're going up. Finally!! Everyone will understand what it's like to be me!!

So yea, there will be a motor connected to each step in a staircase that slides it up and down randomly. In addition, there will be a motor attached to the handrail that moves it and makes it wiggle.

Final project ideas
For my final project I want to create a knitting machine that knits as a person does something. This is a wind powered knitting machine, which I think is kind of beautiful, but unfortunately it doesn't use any computers, so something like that would be a no go for this class.
There have also been people who have "hacked" knitting machines to knit 8-bit patterns and pictures. I don't find that all too interesting and do not own a knitting machine anyway so there wouldn't be much point in trying to do that.
A third thing that people have done is have knitting machines that work based on the mechanical process of something else, such as a clock or rocking chair. The clock is interesting, but the idea has both been done before and who wants to wait a year for a scarf? The rocking chair, like the wind powered machine doesn't involve computers so it too is a no go.
I think I need to find something to say about time and the passage of it if I want to think of something to make involving a knitting machine.

Improv Jungle
Children are willing to dance and move at practically no provocation. You put some tunes on and they'll start running around and moving and shaking. Anyone who has ever been to a wedding with children knows this.
Sometime between the age of 10 (when what scientists call the "ew boys" phase*) and death, most people lose that childish lack of inhibitions. A facsimile of this not giving a crap can be found through the help of alcohol (often needing copious amounts). My project seeks to help people change this behaviour, if only for a short time.
The basic idea of my project is that people are in a dark room, milling about. Everyone is wearing a strange belt. With different movements, various things happen in the room. If a user (to borrow from some CS lingo here) stands very still, slowly blue flowers begin to light up around him. With the rising lights, a soft, mellow bass line starts playing in his vicinity. Another user, standing some distance away, nervously shifts from leg to leg. This slight swinging of her hips starts to light up greenery around her and a jaunty melody plays. Seeing this, she shakes her hips more because it's a VERY catchy song that makes you have to dance. Some distance away, two users are talking to each other, hear the music from the green plants and start dancing, because let's face it, this is hypothetical and that music is REALLY catchy. The red flowers around them light up due to their closeness and there you go! it's a magic music jungle! The users then try all different kinds of actions to light up more colors, but they just look silly because there are only three colors in this jungle.
Obviously I could not illustrate the music. For the purposes of presenting in this class, I will implement the shaker (basically the accelerometer), and the lack of shaking (basically no movement and the blue light turns on slowly), and the proximity of another person with a magnet and the magnetic sensor. That will turn on the red led slowly. None of the lights will go off until reset. In my fully realized implementation of this, the lights would go off slowly with no movement and the blue ones would only start turning off when all the others were. But by slowly I mean over a period of about 20 - 30 minutes.
To add a little fun to this setup, the users will also be able to affect the brightness of the jungle. Calibrating for ambient noise (including the level of the music the plants themselves are emitting), as the level of noise in the room rises, so, too, will the brightness of the lights. This will provide a fun experiment to see if people will get louder as the visual noise of the flowers gets louder. Since we don't have a noise sensor, the serial input of !!!!!'s will be a substitute.
Here are the sensors I will be using. This is a hall effect magnetic sensor. It will be affecting the red lights.

scratch that
Scratch that old project 2. I don't like it, and no matter how many artsy words I throw in it still doesn't make any sense. why wouldn't everyone just go into one room? 'Tis a silly idea. New idea!
Catherine showed me: http://likebelt.com/ and suggested I make a game where people have to thrust at each other. I immediately thought this was weird. And still do, but I love the ridiculousness of it. How about this. You have only one room, a dark room with weird, mechanical plants all around. You and the group of strangers you're with are tasked with waking up the plants by doing various actions. Each action coincides with a different color and part of the plant. Shaking your hips (which are outfitted with accelerometers) wakes up the green leaves and shrubbery (not EVERYTHING is led, mind you, there are some regular spotlights around of various colors). Thrusting at another person's belt wakes up the red flowers. Standing absolutely still wakes up the blue. Etc, etc. The people put in the room aren't told what does what so they have to figure it out. Perhaps someone does a really awkward handshake and red flowers start to wake up. Or maybe someone's really non-cooperative and the blue flowers around them are all turned on. You get the point. Oh, and it's also based on proximity. I don't know how to do the proximity yet, though.

Project 2
Our second project we're tasked with getting two boards to communicate serially (or the board and the computer, but where's the fun in that). Either way, the board has to communicate through the serial port and then react in some way using LEDs. My idea involves fostering communication and cooperation. Or the opposite, competition is fun, too. Anyways, in ideal form this project would involve two rooms with two different LED art installations. These would be interactive, but not in the way people would expect. They change based on the noise level in the adjacent room. If it's loud, the picture grows and flows, if it's quiet, the picture is more muted and calm. This would encourage people to run from room to room trying to see each display.
In model form, I would connect my led sound meter (the bar of lights) to my arduino and depending on how many !'s I typed into the serial port would be how much the bar lights up.
On second thought, I think a jungle that people could walk through would be even more awesome, made of lights, of course. Think Avatar. Or in a much less crazy CG way, think these lights from apartmenttherapy.com: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/magnificent-high-tech-led-bouq-101115. Of course, they would still "grow" based on the noise in the next room.
This also conjures up a sort of natural prisoner's dilemna. Assuming the rooms are separated enough, the only way for each of the people to see all the pretty lights would be for them to be quiet, but having no way of making sure the other person stays quiet, you must make the effort of not making noise. Of course, when the pretty lights come on, I like to think people would make lots of "oohs" and "ahhs" which would then incentivize the other room's people to be loud in retaliation. Oh, I love anonymous competition like this.

My project is an LED wall in a hallway or tunnel. I've given up on the motion sensors because not only are they more difficult to use than light sensors, but they aren't as cost effective either. That's a lose-lose. So, my design is still essentially the same, but instead of using passive IR to detect motion it will detect whether or not the light sensitive diode is covered up. Of course, the diode will have to be encased in a sort of tube to prevent the leds around it from interfering, but the motion sensor would have needed the same thing.
Here is a conceptual drawing of what I am imagining. The colors will fade as the person moves, leaving a trail of light behind them. If another person walks by, they will trail a different, random color. If one person's trail overtakes another's, then the colors would mix. The setup would include a wall of LEDs (in this diagram, the blue dots), and at the four foot vertical mark, a line of light sensors. These would be encased in small tubes shielding them from the light of the surrounding LEDs.

Assignment 2
I sort of forgot exactly what we were supposed to do for this blog post. I think it was that we should think of an awesome idea we'd like to eventually make and then make a small prototype version of it. My idea that I'd love to eventually make is in the realm of wearable art (everything sounds fancy when you say 'realm'). Anyway, I think a sweater or a scarf would be really cool if it had led's embedded in it that changed color based on the temperature. Okay, so maybe a scarf would be better for this, other wise you'll end up like those shirts in the 80's that changed color based on heat and just made people look like they had psychedelic sweat stains. Or even better, apparently they made swim trunks. Wow. Okay, so I will think of a different idea. Yes. A much different idea.

First Post
My background:
I got my undergraduate degree in computer science from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (TAMUCC), I am now a second year Viz grad student. That's pretty much it for the boring background. I grew up in California until I was ten and then moved to Ft. Collins, CO where I lived until I graduated high school and moved to Corpus with my family. My interests lie in camping (which I didn't take advantage of Colorado nearly as much as I should have with that), knitting, art, movies, books, and video games.
I knit whenever I have free hands and also enjoy spinning my own yarn (though I'm much slower at that and don't do it nearly as often). I like the process of things, so even though it makes more sense to buy yarn I like making something from scratch (which is why one day I'll own and Alpaca and then it'll REALLY be from scratch!). I like most kinds of art, except for installation art and performance art. I just don't get most of those, there are of course exceptions. I will watch pretty much any movie, even if it's terrible I will not turn it off. Generally I go for supernatural horror, though. I'm a total sucker for the paranormal activity (more like CRAPtivity, eh? eh?) series and resident evil movies. I play way more minecraft and sims than I should and also indulge in pretty rpgs like skyrim or less pretty turn-based strategies like Rome: Total War. Oh, and I read mostly fiction. Mostly fantasy fiction. Though if I'm feeling particularly motivated I'll tackle a classic (except for Dickens, I can't read his stuff to save my life) or a more grownup novel.

I thought this was neat because it combined nature and sound AND technology. I don't know if those are real flowers, I'm guessing not, but the idea of it being real flowers is really cool.

This one is a wooden mirror, which just in the name it sounds like two things that don't go together. I like how something mechanical can be as warm and beautiful as a wooden sculpture.

I like this one because it's pretty. It's not very complicated, but I think it's beauty is in the simplicity of the design and movement.
I got my undergraduate degree in computer science from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (TAMUCC), I am now a second year Viz grad student. That's pretty much it for the boring background.
